The weather was remarkably mild for November as the Dartmouth Club Officers Association gathered in Hanover to be brought up to date with each other and the College. The 82 officers and 65 wives who attended this 15th annual session met in Faulkner Recital Hall in Hopkins Center Friday afternoon, November 6, to hear reports from three college officers. Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, Director of Admissions, explained "Admissions 1970"; James F. Cusick, Professor of Economics Emeritus, spoke on "The Study on Continuing Education"; and Charles T. Wood, Professor of History, discussed "May 1970 in Retrospect."
Annual Awards Made
The reception and dinner in Alumni Hall that evening was followed by the awards program, presided over by David B. Metz '54 of Westchester County, N. Y., president of the Association. The third annual Dartmouth Clubs of the Year awards went to Hartford, Conn., in the large club category, and to Delaware for the small clubs. They were cited for all-around excellence, especially in programming and communications. The Club President of the Year award was presented to E. Swift Lawrence '55 of the Rhode Island club and Secretary of the Year honors went to H. Flint Ranney '56 of Los Angeles. They received framed color photographs of Dartmouth Hall and citations which appear in their class columns in this issue. The Dartmouth Club at Stanford University was given a special commendation in recognition of excellence in programming and recruiting in their unique position on a college campus.
An address by President Kemeny completed the dinner program.
The group was up early Saturday morning for a buffet breakfast and to hear remarks from Vice President George H. Colton '35 and J. Michael McGean '49, Secretary of the College, concerning the roles of the alumni and the Alumni Council in the years ahead. Club officers and wives met in Silsby Hall later in the morning to bring the subject full circle with a panel discussion on "The Role of the Alumni Club in the Decade of the 70's." Moderator was Paul H. Mannes '55 and panelists and their topics were Josiah Stevenson IV '57, "Enrollment Oriented Activities"; Peter C. Schwartz '60, "Student Liaison"; Arthur P. G. McGinnes III '64. "The Role of the Younger Alumnus"; and Kenneth W. Lundstrom '55, "Continuing Education."
Wellesley Exchange Discussed
At a special program in Bentley Theater for wives, Katharine S. Stevens, Assistant Dean of the College, and Paula Sweeney (Mt Holyoke '71), a special student at Dartmouth this year, talked about the Wellesley exchange program.
The pleasantly lopsided football game with Columbia Saturday afternoon gave everybody some physical exercise as they rose to cheer eight Dartmouth touchdowns. Following a cocktail party and supper in Alumni Hall in the evening, the Dartmouth Injunaires entertained and William E. Aydelott '72 provided "A Look at Student Film Making."
Newly elected officers of the Association for 1970-71 are: Paul H. Mannes '55, Washington, D. C., president; Peter Schwartz '60, Hartford, Conn., vice president; David E. Orr '57, Hanover, secretary. The new executive committee members are: E. Swift Lawrence '55, Rhode Island; Lyon Greenberg '54, Albany; Richard Dutton '51, Waterbury; Sabin Danziger '64, Long Island; Edwin Lyon, '52, North Shore; and Kenneth W. Lundstrom '55, Delaware.
During the weekend a resolution was passed by the Dartmouth Club Officers Association and forwarded to the Board of Trustees, urging the Trustees to take their time in making any decision about coeducation at Dartmouth. The resolution requested that the Trustees take special steps to solicit the views of alumni officers before a final decision is reached.
