In the annual Smith and Rollins prize speaking contests held the evening of March 24, Ralph J. Richardson '09 and Ralph L. Theller '09 were the winners of the Smith prizes for excellence in extemporaneous debate, while Austin C. Keough '11, Kenneth F. Clark '11, and Warren C. Shaw '10, finished in the order named for the Rollins prizes in oratory.
The debate for the Smith prize was open to the members of the senior class and was on the subject, Resolved: "That in New Hampshire a Direct Primary Law Should Be Enacted." Both Richardson and Theller supported the affirmative of the question. Keough in winning the first Rollins prize of forty dollars, delivered "A Plea for Cuba," as spoken by U. S.. Senator Thurston just before the war with Spain. Clark presented the "Reply to Corry," by Grattan, while Shaw gave "The Nomination Speech for James G. Blaine," by Ingersoll.
