The house at 35 College Street, north of Wheeler Hall, known to the alumni of past days as the old Dewey house, was almost totally destroyed by fire early on New Year's morning. The house was occupied by Professor H. W. Shelton of the Tuck School and his family. When the fire was discovered, it had gained such headway that the occupants of the house were obliged to escape by crawling through smoke on their hands and knees to a back stairway. The cause of the fire is thought to have been overheated pipes from the furnace. The building, which was owned by the College, will not be replaced at present.
