WEBSTER'S FIRST ORATION BRINGS $80 AT SALE
May, 1922

An extremely rare volume, the earliest oration of Daniel Webster, pronounced at Hanover, July 4, 1880, on the twenty-fourth anniversary of American Independence, while Webster was a junior at Dartmouth and only eighteen years of age, was recently purchased by N. E. Samuel of New York, for $BO. The book was one of the items of the historical library collected by the late James Phinney Baxter, former mayor of Portland, and sold at the Anderson Galleries in New York. The oration is described as distinctly patriotic in character and a prophecy of the famous orator's future greatness. It was printed in Hanover in the year of its delivery.
