It's proven to be the earliest spring in years weatherwise. Now all that remains is to see if Dartmouth's legions can take advantage of the opportunity to make some athletic hay.

At virtually every turn, the coaches and old hands around Hanover have said the same thing: "I can't remember the snow disappearing this early in years." When the teams returned from the late-March ventures into the Southland, the ground was clear and ready for play.

Granted, there was the traditional early-April snowfall (enough to remind everyone that it's not nice to fool with Mother Nature and think we were getting away from a comparatively light winter so easily), but for the most part the season has begun smoothly.

As we pen these words in mid-April, the combat has barely begun. In fact, we've had to stretch the editor's deadline a bit just to record the events of the first full weekend of the season. Combined with the efforts during the spring vacation trips, they provide some measure of what's to be expected prior to the end of May. It looks like this:
