The August number of the MassachusettsLaw Quarterly, issued by the Bar Association, reproduces from the Boston Herald a communication by William D. Parkinson under the title "The Swearing Mill," descanting upon the unfortunate tendency to multiply useless oaths in legal and administrative proceedings.
An illustrated article in Deutsch Amerika represents John Cotton Dana sitting for the sculptress Gerta Ries, who is putting the finishing touch to a bust of the sitter. The sculptured head and the natural one, both sharply defined in the cut, appear in substantial agreement, while the artist seems to be glancing admiringly from one to the other. The article itself mingles eulogy of the artist with eulogy of the sitter, who, at the height of a distinguished career, out of a generous recognition of German art, has condescended to place himself at the mercy of the youthful artist. Possibly Mr. Dana would say that the foregoing was based on a rather free translation of the text and illustration as well.
