The ALUMNI MAGAZINE is grateful for the opportunity to print here two poems by Fred Lewis Pattee '88, Professor of American Literature at Pennsylvania State University. The first, "Hanover Weather, A Dirge," was written by Professor Pattee in 1887; the second, "The Dartmouth Rouse," was written especially for the Pow Wow held in Chicago, February 22 and 23.
Hanover WeatherA Dirge
From the time the Fresh appear Till we drink the "wet-down" beer All the seasons swarm with miseries By the band, band, band! For September winds are dust And it loads each passing gust Till we live in choking, blinding Clouds of sand, sand, sand!
With the winter comes the snow In one fierce unceasing flow Till the town resembles Greenland's Icy land, land, land; And the mercury freezes fast, And forever howls the blast, Oh the joyousness when Spring is Near at hand, hand, hand!
But when comes the wished-for Spring, When we thought the world would sing, Then the streets are ankle deep with Oozy jam, jam, jam! And the old professors tear, And the wicked students swear, And from morn till eve the air is Full of dam, dam, dam !
The Dartmouth Rouse
Men of Dartmouth, up! the yell now! Wah hoo' wah! with lusty swell now, Rouse old Eleazar Wheelock With the roar. Here's to all the men of Dartmouth, Rolling like a tide from Dartmouth, Give the yell like Dartmouth men now O'er and o'er.
Men of Dartmouth up ! the team now! Stalwart men, our hope, our dream now, Yell for all the Dartmouth teams now With a will! Not a team but fought like yoemen, Not a man but faced his foeman, Bringing glory to old Dartmouth On the Hill.
Men of Dartmouth, can we fail now, Can we falter, can we quail now, Can we strive for less than victory And the crown; With the Dartmouth men behind us, With the Dartmouth bond to bind us, And with Alma Mater up there Looking down?
Men of Dartmouth, up! a toast now, Without haste now, without boast now! Here's a pledge to Alma Mater Made anew: Here's a life for Dear old Dartmouth, Here's a strife for Dear old Dartmouth, While we've left a heart to love her We'll be true
