SIDNEY L. GULICK: '83. George H. Doran Co. New York.
This book is the report submitted by the author who was sent on a mission of goodwill to the churches in the Orient. He made two trips east, one in 1915 and the other in 1923. The author, Sidney L. Gulick, is secretary of the Commission on International Justice and Goodwill, Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, and also secretary on Oriental Relations of the American Council of the World Alliance for International Fellow- ship through the Churches. These bodies felt the call to supplement the regular missionary work in the East by sending out a special messenger and a special message to the churches.
The title of the book would therefore have been nearer the truth had it been called a report instead of the somewhat misleading one used. It is a report including ordinary diary traveling records, names of persons met and interviewed, conversations, personal experiences, letters received and impressions and convictions gained during the trip. To this has been added an altogether unnecessary chapter on the Japanese Earthquake, written in New York, from newspaper reports, after his return from the East. The outstanding note in the report is the faithfulness with which the MESSAGE was delivered and how it was received. Had this title been used the reader would doubtless have escaped the impression that the book is propaganda of a political character as well as religious.
Read as a report of an interested observer and one well qualified to gather valuable impressions the book yields interesting observations. It is also a significant thing that a special messenger bearing a special message should have gone to these churches. International goodwill and friendship cannot be too much emphasized these days. 'The Federal Council of Churches made an excellent choice in Dr. Gulick.
We would recommend the book to those who are interested in learning about how present conditions in these countries impressed the author.
