The freshman baseball team opened its season at New Haven, April 27 being defeated 3 to 0 by the Yale freshman team. From start to finish the contest was a battle of pitchers, Burnell, of Yale, allowing the Dartmouth batters but one hit while Duplin, for Dartmouth, shut the New Haven men down to three safe blows. All of the scoring was done in the first inning when a hit, two bases on balls, and an error paved the way for three Yale runs. Only one member of the Dartmouth team reached second base during the afternoon, when Tracy, the only man to connect with Burnell's pitches hit sharply for two bases. Burnell struck out seven men and gave only one base on balls. Duplin, of Dartmouth, was inclined to be wild, passing four men and hitting two others.
A home run in the tenth inning by Captain Day, of the Freshman team, gave the Dartmouth first year men a decision over Goddard Seminary on Memorial Field, Hanover, May 4. For eight scoreless innings Carver, of Dartmouth, and Mathews, of Goddard pitched air-tight ball, Goddard scoring first in the ninth inning by means of a single, two sacrifices, and another hit. The Freshman team evened the score in its turn at bat, . Stevens reaching first on an error, advancing on a sacrifice hit and scoring on a single by Coulter. In the pitching duel Mathews, of Goddard, won an edge by striking out six men and giving but five hits. Carver was touched for six hits and struck out only two batters.
At Cambridge, May 7, the Dartmouth freshmen defeated the Harvard freshmen by a score of 9 to 4, completely outplaying the Crimson nine and piling up a five-run lead by means of heavy hitting.
Duplin, pitching for the freshmen in a game against Maiden High School, at Hanover, May 17, struck out fourteen batters and gave but two hits when the Dartmouth team defeated the school boys 'by a score ef 9 to 0. Errors were frequent throughout the course of the game, Dartmouth players being charged with six and the Maiden men with four. Stevens, of Dartmouth, who connected for two three base hits and scored two runs was the leader of the freshman attack. Holden, of Maiden procured the only hits allotted to his team.
