GEORGE L. KIBBEE DIES AT MANCHESTER HOME
August 1924

George L. Kibbee, editorial writer for many years on the staff of the Manchester Union, died suddenly as the result of a heart affection of long standing at his home in Manchester recently.

Mr. Kibbee had been connected with newspaper work since the age of 16, when he first started work around the press room of the Manchester Mirror. Although he was able to acquire little school education, Mr. Kibbee educated himself in the hours off from work, and soon joined the editorial staff of the Union, with which he was connected almost continually for 40 years.

He received an A.M. degree from Dartmouth in 1919 in recognition of his work and ability as an editorial writer. The College was one of Mr. Kibbee's greatest interests, and he was the personal friend of many Dartmouth administrators and graduates.

Commenting on the death of Mr. Kibbee The Dartmouth carried the following editorial:

"In the death of George L. Kibbee, noted editorial writer of Manchester, Dartmouth loses one of her strongest and most consistent friends. Mr. Kibbee was not a graduate of Dartmouth, nor even of a grammar school, but he had a natural intellectual interest and a willingness to educate himself which made him a scholar of great learning and ability. Mr. Kibbee has done much for Dartmouth working through his constant love for the College, and Dartmouth acknowledged his abilities and affection by conferring an honorary degree! on him in 1919. The loss of his personal relationship with the College is mourned by all Dartmouth men."
