Report of the Alumni Fund CommitteeClarence G. McDavitt '00'
Mr. McDavitt reported receipts to the Fund as of the same date last year, showing a gratifying increase of $7000, and 500 contributors. The total receipts for June 13 were approximately $56,000, from something over 2900 contributors. An accurate forecast of the total amount for the year could not be made but indications were that the total would substantially exceed the amount contributed last year. Mr. McDavitt outlined the methods employed, explaining the new developments of the year and particularly the stimulus given to the Fund through the Chicago alumni at the time of the Pow Wow. Following the discussion it was Voted: (1) That there be applied to the reduction of the Gymnasium Mortgage Debt (reducing the balance of this to $10,000) $5,000 (2) That there be applied to the William Jewett Tucker Fellowship for the year ending June, 1924 $1,000 (3) That the balance be appropriated to apply on current expenses of the College and as an addition to the permanent endowment fund in such proportion as the Committee may approve, after the final figures for the year, both for the Fun and the College, are available.
Report of the Committee on AlumniProjects—Warren C. Agry '11
The report of this committee had largely to do with the activities of a sub-committee, of which Mr. Agry was chairman, investigating the advisability of asking the alumni associations to underwrite the expenses of moving pictures of the important football games in 1924. In view of the expense involved and the usual unsatisfactory nature of the pictures when exhibited, unless presented by a slow projection machine and accompanied by expert explanation the committee reported that it- was at present inadvisable to ask the alumni associations to subscribe in this way. This position taken by the committee meets with the approval of the Athletic Council.
Report of the Committee on Student LoanFunds—George M. Morris '11
At the October meeting of the Council a special committee, of which G. M. Morris was chairman, was appointed to investigate the situation as it existed with reference to funds operated by local alumni associations for the benefit of students at Dartmouth College. The report submitted by the committee covered the funds maintained by local associations, the general funds, the loan fund maintained by the Harmon Foundation, and the various small loan funds operated by administrative officers of the College. Special reference was made to the important work of the pioneer loan fund organization, the Dartmouth Educational Association, whose resources were being excellently maintained for the benefit of needy students. The conclusions of the committee were that no present action by the Council was called for and that the supply of funds seems to be keeping abreast of the demand. Associations interested in organizing loan funds of their own will be informed as to the successful methods employed by other loan organizations. The report called for no action, but in view of the work done by the Dartmouth Educational Association, it was Voted: That the appreciation of the Council be expressed to Robert J. Holmes, treasurer of the Dartmouth Educational Association, for his efficient work in maintaining the funds of the Association. It was then Voted: That the report of the committee be approved and placed on file.
The Dartmouth Outing ClubRobert M. Morgan '24
The president of the Outing Club for the past year, R. M. Morgan '24, had been invited to attend the meeting and tell the members of the Council of the work of the Outing Club from the undergraduate point of view. He outlined the growing resources and activities of the Club, emphasizing the enormous amount of detail work which the expansion of the Club has placed on the officers and committees. As a member of Palaeopitus and the Undergraduate Committee on Educational Policy, he described the work of that committee and also some of the important campus events of the year. Considerable discussion ensued, but no action was. called for.
Communication From Palaeopitus
The secretary presented a letter received, from Charles M. French '24, secretary of Palaeopitus, asking for the cooperation of the alumni in its efforts to prevent any disrepute to the College at the time of Commencement, football games or other public occasions, through the use of liquor. It was stated that while no one felt the liquor situation at Dartmouth was acute and while undergraduate organizations had the matter well in hand so far as the undergraduates themselves were concerned, alumni cooperation would be beneficial in every way.
The policy of Palaeopitus in this respect was quoted as follows :
"Since it is apparent to the entire College that the drinking of intoxicating liquors can not help but sully the good name of the College, Palaeopitus sets itself down as vigorously opposed to such drinking in Hanover or wherever the name of Dartmouth is concerned."
A committee, consisting of Messrs. Parkinson, Chamberlin, and Trowbridge, was appointed to consider the communication and on its recommendation the Council passed the following resolutions :
Resolved: That the Alumni Council indorses the action of Palaeopitus with relation to the drinking of intoxicating liquors as set forth in its letter of June 11, 1924.
Resolved: That in the opinion of the Council the student body is handling its own problem in a manner that should command the confidence and loyal support of all interested in the welfare of the student body and of the College.
Resolved further: That regardless of personal habits and personal views upon political prohibition we appeal to the alumni individually and collectively to cooperate heartily with the request of Palaeopitus and to cooperate in support of its position. It was further
Voted: That the chair appoint a committee to study the question and report at the fall meeting of the Council. Pursuant to this vote the chair appointed the following: L. R. Chamberlin 'O5 J. R. Chandler '9B L. M. Symmes 'OB.
The secretary presented a communication from the Dean of Freshmen, E. Gordon Bill, relative to the participation of local alumni associations in the operation of the Selective Process. Following some discussion it was Voted: That the chair appoint a committee of three to make a further study of the cooperation of associations of alumni in the Selective Process and to report at the fall meeting.
The following committee was appointed: Chairman: C. G. McDavitt '00 C. B. Curtis '89 E. F. Clark '01.
Mr. Marden, chairman of the committee appointed to follow the process of the educational investigation going on in the College, reported briefly on the progress of that movement which, so far as published results are concerned, has been largely confined during the past semester to the undergraduate committee. A more extended report may be expected later.
The meeting adjourned at 6.15 p. m. for dinner in College Hall as the guests of the College.
The only speaker at the after-dinner session was President Hopkins, who presented at some length and in a vivid manner the present situation in the College. After outlining some of the most interesting features of his recent trip among the educational centers of England he spoke of the progress of the various committees considering the educational policy of the College. The painstaking and suggestive report of the Undergraduate Committee was referred to as well as the more prolonged investigation being conducted by the Faculty Committee on Educational Policy. There was extended discussion following the president's address, both from the principal speaker -and the members of the Council.
Morning Session The committee reassembled on Saturday morning, June 14) ;n Wentworth Hall at 9 o'clock. The first order of business was a discussion of the report of the committee on alumni trustees appointed by the Alumni Association in June, 1923. This report had already appeared in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and as it was to be acted upon by the Alumni Association at its meeting on June 16, no action by the Council was called for, although the report very obviously had the approval of the meeting.
Report From the Athletic CouncilRichard Parkhurst 'l6
A report from the Athletic Council was then made by Richard Parkhurst 'l6, the retiring alumni member of that Council. He described the present situation in all branches of athletic sports and answered many questions raised by various members of the Council. Among the new policies which he described was that of appointing managers of the various sports from the junior class instead of from the senior, as heretofore.

McNutt, Carr, Parkinson and Trowbridge. Each and every one has been keenly interested in the affairs of the Council, has attended all its sessions with great regularity, and has treated all its problems in an intelligent and judicial manner. The Council wishes to express its keen regret that their terms have expired and to thank them in behalf of this organization and the College for the contribution which they have made to its welfare. It was also moved and Voted: That the Council express to Mr. Mc-Davitt its keen appreciation of his valuable work as chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee for the past two years.
