In spite of Lane's furious batting which netted him four singles in four appearances at bat, his pitching was not good enough to win the opening game against Goddard Seminary on May 2. Lane passed seven and struck out but two while smart defensive" playing by the Vermont school prevented the Green plebes from converting their hits into runs.
The second contest of the year against Harvard in Cambridge on May 6 was also disappointing. Haley, Hazelton's starting pitcher, was soon knocked out of the box and Lane, who relieved him, was hardly more effective. The 16-5 score was a personal victory for Barbee, Crimson yearling pitching ace, whose presence in the Cambridge ranks augurs ill for future Green varsities.
Rain cancelled the return game with Goddard scheduled for May 11 and Dean Academy found little trouble in winning 8-3 in its visit to Hanover May 16. Hughes, prep school pitcher, fanned 16 men. Hazelton used three new hurlers, Nixon, Patch and Goulding', but none proved effective.
The New Hampton game at Hanover May 18, however, was a different story. Van Riper was on the mound for the yearlings and pitched acceptably for seven innings. He gave way to Haley who allowed two New Hampton runs in the ninth but kept the Dartmouth team three runs ahead for a 10-7 win. The total of 11 errors and 20 hits indicates a loosely played game.
