The Dartmouth debating team opened its season in a debate on the growing tendency of governments to invade the rights of individuals with a trio of Cambridge University students. W. C. Cusack '27, E. P. Alis '29 and I. Rubin '28 won the decision of the audience over H. G. G. Herklots of Trinity College, A. L. Hutchinson of Christs' College and W. G. Fordham of Magdalene College, who upheld the government in their invasion of individual rights. Though the attendance was large, it was felt by the members of the Forensic Union that the novelty of an international debate alone drew the attention and that there was no evidence of a reviving of student interest in debating of itself.
Dartmouth will next take the platform in the first meeting of members of the Eastern Intercollegiate debating league when the College opposes Harvard and Amherst in a threecornered debate on December 3. The Dartmouth affirmative tearn of A. A. Armstrong '27 and R. L. Reinhardt '27 with R. E. Ela '3O alternate will meet Harvard and the affirmative team of E. P. Arliss '29 and W. E. Brisbon '29 with L. W. Doob '29 as alternate will oppose Amherst in Dartmouth Hall. The affirmative team will debate Boston College on the same subject, "Resolved, That coeducation as in the state colleges should be inaugurated in the colleges of the league," on December 4. R. L. Reinhardt 27 has been chosen by coach Hultzem to train the 1930 debators.
