In reply t0 inquiries concerning an editorial m the Boston Herald, Nov. 4, which named Mr George F. Baker, of New York, as the benefactor whose munificent gift to Dartmouth will add to the College plant the longawaited and much-needed library resident Hopkins said: "The surmise is correct and it would not be fair to Mr. Baker to deny it. His munificent gift to Dartmouth has double vlaue because of its timeliness and the provision which it makes to meet an imperative need.
The interest in the identity of the donor has been so widespread and the gratitude of Dartmouth men has been so deep that I am sure Mr. Baker will pardon me if I do not attempt further to conceal him as the author of this great good for the College and his fine memorial to his uncle."
Mr. Baker's gift to Dartmouth is, with the exception of the gifts of Mr. Tuck, the largest single donation which the College has ever received tor a specific purpose and is the second that he has made to Dartmouth in memory of his uncle, Fisher Ames Baker of the class of 1859, his first gift having been the sum of $lOO,OOO.
In addition to Dartmouth, Mr. Baker has given liberally of his wealth to Harvard, Cornell, and Columbia, the new $5,000,000 Harvard University Business School representing his largest gift.
Mr. Baker, who has been for many years a leading figure in the New york financial world, has been Chairman of the Beard of the First National Bank of New York since 1909 and was before that President of the Bank. He is a Director of the New York Central Railroad and affiliated companies, of the Erie Railroad Company, the United,and States Steel Corporation, the pullman Company, The American Telephone and Telegraph Company and many other arge corporations. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the New York Chamber of Commerce, of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and of the American Fine Arts Society.
n addition to the large sums which he has presented to Dartmouth, Harvard, Cornell, and o umbia Mr. Baker is known too as the donator to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of Kegault's famous painting, "Salome."
