At a dinner held in the Hotel Bristol, Vienna, on February 22, warm tribute was paid to the American minister, Albert H. Washburn, Professor of Political Science and International Law at Dartmouth. The president of the Republic, Dr. Michael Hainisch, was present at the dinner and spoke enthusiastically of the great services which Mr. Washburn has done in bringing about friendly relations between the United States and Austria. In conclusion President Hainisch said "One of those who have known best how to maintain good relations with the United States is His Excellency, Mr. Washburn. He does not talk much but those who know him well know what we owe him. It is he who has made public opinion in America friendly toward us. It is a pleasant obligation to express today to Mr. Washburn the thanks of the Austrian state and of the Austrian people and I wish that Mr. Washburn may remain with us for many years."

In reply Mr. Washburn delivered an address which was fully reported in the Vienna papers and commented on as of great importance and insight into the relations of the United States to Europe in general and of Austria in particular.
