The Freshmen Get Acclimated
NOVEMBER 1927

During the first week of College the freshmen found that elaborate precautions had been taken to help them become acclimated to their Hanover environment. Dean Bill had arranged a schedule of introductory lectures to assist them in getting acquainted with the College and the curriculum. The Christian Association helped by arranging the freshman reception and the meeting at the Bema. President Hopkins and Professors Leland Griggs and Royal C. Nemiah spoke, and Professor Harry Wellman led the class in singing Dartmouth songs. The meeting at the Bema served to introduce the religious aspect of college life to the entering class, Palaeopitus sponsored Activity Night, which consisted of speeches by the leaders in the various extra-curricular activities, and also a hum, in order that the class of 1931 might become familiar with this tradition.

The sophomores won the annual football fight from the freshmen 5-0, although outnumbered three to one. Five white-washed footballs were used, and the final gun found all of them in sophomore territory.

The extensive improvements made on the Nugget during the summer have met with the approval of the undergraduates. New and more comfortable seats, aisle lights, and two new projectors were installed. The building was lengthened toward Wheelock street, providing a lobby in which is a food concession, ticket window and ladies rest room. The entrance now fronts on Wheelock street and is handsomely finished in Colonial style.
