Dartmouth 3—Pennsylvania 2
AUGUST, 1927

A twelve inning pitchers' battle was broken up at Philadelphia May 21 when Foster Sanford, University of Pennsylvania pitching star, uncorked a wild pitch which scored Elliott, of Dartmouth, and gave the Green team the game by a score of 3 to 2. Against Sanford, Van Riper, pitching for Dartmouth, twirled a steady game and sailed through the twelfth frame by retiring the Penn. team with a runner on second base. Deuch had reached second when outfielder Owl dropped his long fly. Van Riper then struck out Scull and Aldrich, pinch hitters who had been sent to the plate to blast in the winning run. Murphy, who opened the Dartmouth half of the twelfth, was retired at first base, but following him Elliott, Stevens, and Dey singled, and filled the bases. Sanford then struck out Norris and gave every indication of being able to extricate himself from the hole until his wild pitch upset predictions. During the game Sanford struck out 14 men.
