Surprising all but those familiar with the ability of the men comprising the track team Dartmouth competitors led the eastern colleges in qualifying men to withstand the assault of western athletes in the annual I. C. A. A. A. A. Track and Field Championship meet held in Philadelphia May 27 and 28. Leland Stanford, Jr. University, qualifying 14 men led the scoring on the first day, with the University of Southern California, holder of the championship for the past two years, qualifying ten men and attaining second position. Dartmouth qualified nine men, Yale and Pennsylvania State College eight men each, Pennsylvania seven, Princeton six, and Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Harvard, and California five men each. Other qualifiers . were Cornell and Georgetown with four men each, Syracuse with three men, M. I. T. and Brown two each, and Bates, Boston College, Bowdoin, Columbia, Holy Cross and Maine one each.

Dartmouth's qualifiers were Glendinning in the 220 yard dash, Cooley in the 100 yard dash, Swope in the quarter mile, Martin in the half mile, Wells and Black in the high hurdles, Wells in the low hurdles, Maynard in the high jump and Covert in the javelin.

In the final events on the following day Stanford University overwhelmed the field to score a total of 36 1-2 points, with Pennsylvania State second at 27 points, Yale third at 23 1-2, Southern California fourth at 23, and Dartmouth fifth at 16. Other scorers were Georgetown 14, California 10 1-2, Syracuse 10, Cornell and Pennsylvania 8 each, Pittsburgh 7, Harvard 6, Princeton 5 1-2, M. I. T. and Michigan State 5 each, Boston College, Brown, and Colby 4 each, Maine and Bates 3 each, and Bowdoin 2.

Dartmouth men accounted for two championships when Maynard outjumped King, last year's winner, to win the high jump, and Wells led a fast field to win the high hurdles race. Maynard's mark in the high jump was 6 feet 4 3-4 inches, and Wells' time 14 8-10 seconds. Wells scored also in the low hurdles, finishing in third place, Martin took fourth place in the half mile, Swope fifth in the quarter mile.

The meet was featured by the world's record breaking pole vault of Carr, of Yale, who soared over the bar at a height of 14 feet.
