JOHN SCALES, SECRETARY OF 1863 DIES

Shortly before this issue went to press word was received of the death of John Scales 63 on July 6. Mr. Scales was the secretary of his class and the second oldest alumnus of the College at the time of his death. He was born in 1835 and would have been ninetythree years old on October 6. He had been a teacher and a newspaper man during his active life and since retirement had devoted his energies chiefly to historical writing. This work he continued almost, until the day of his death in the local papers of Dover. He* was the father of two Dartmouth graduates, Burton T. Scales '95 and Robert L. Scales 'Ol, both of whom are now deceased. He was one of the most active member of the Secretaries Association, always present at its annual meeting in Hanover and a participant in its affairs.
