The first award of the regional scholarships, six special four-year awards given to men of outstanding excellence in the entering freshman class, was made this year. The scholarships are $700 each and once awarded will be continued as long as the recipient remains an undergraduate in good standing and is eligible for scholarship aid. There are two of these awards for men from California, two from Connecticut, and two from New Hampshire.
The California scholarships were awarded to Jeremiah E. Fries of Los Angeles and Dana S. Redington, son of T. T. Redington '07, of Pasadena. These scholarships are based on a fund of $100,000 given by Mrs. William P. Johnson of San Francisco as a memorial to her husband, William Pierce Johnson '80.
The Connecticut scholarships were given to William P. Georgen of Danbury and Ernest L. Barcella of North Haven. These scholarships are based on a fund of $117,000 given by bequest of Charles F. Brooker of Ansonia.
The New Hampshire scholarships were awarded to Charles L. Levesque of Manchester and Herman B. Chase of New Hampton. The funds are derived from the proceeds of timber cuttings on the Second College Grant, a tract of land in northeastern New Hampshire given to the College by the State of New Hampshire in 1807.
