A nine-year old master s-degree program in computer and information systems at Dartmouth has just graduated its last class. The program, which blended managerial and technical studies and graduated a total of 121 students, failed to attract enough scholars to make it financially self-supporting, according to Director Thomas Kurtz. He noted that similar programs at other colleges and corporations, including the Wang Institute, have also failed. "The country is still experimenting with what is just the right blend," said Kurtz. "How technical do people have to be to manage technical projects?"
Meanwhile, another interdisciplinary program, policy studies, also was phased out this year by the faculty. The nine-year-old undergraduate program was popular with students but lacked sufficient support from the faculty, according to officials.
Two new programs, linguistics and cognitive studies and film studies, earned tentative faculty approval this year. There was also a name change: the Drama Department is now the Department of Drama and Film Studies.
