By IVAN GONCHAKOV. Translated from the Russian by Natalie A. Duddington. The Macmillan Company, New York.

This is the first complete English translation of a classic Russian novel which appeared in the original in 1858. The story helps to explain, perhaps, the quick collapse of the old aristocracy under the Bolshevik onslaught. The hero, Oblomov, embodies a fatal weakness often found in his class. He was intelligent, his soul was pure and noble, but apathy and lack of will-power made it impossible for him to cope with the practical problems of every-day life.

The excellent translation gives in full the third and fourth parts which were severely abridged in the older translation, to the great detriment of the novel.
