In a field of eight colleges in 1873 the new Dartmouthcrew was beaten by only three and would have done betterhad it not gotten away to a very bad start,. The other entrieswere: Cornell, Columbia, Williams, Harvard, Yale, Am-herst, Wesleyan, and Bowdoin. Biglin, the Dartmouthcoach, defeated an old rival, Ellis Ward, in a match race.
