Morton's Toe, the Savior
DECEMBER 1931

This time Morton faded into his end zone and kicked. The ball was a zooming spiral which floated over the amazed Crickard's fingertips and went bounding merrily up the field to be recovered 70 yards away. What a kick!

At the start of the second half Harvard took the ball on their own 28-yard line and ground out play after play to carry all the way down to the Dartmouth ten-yard line. There a gallant crew again held for downs and Morton found himself in punt formation on his goal line. Those critics are few who say that Bill Morton is not the best punter in the East and possibly in the country. Here was the greatest test of all and Morton this time kicked 65 yards up the field.

There had not been a single time from that touchdown pass to this point that Dartmouth had been on the offensive. They had their backs to the wall and the breaks never had come. Yet on the following punt the not-too-sure Mr. Crickard dropped it, and Ward Donner recovered on the Crimson 38-yard line.

Morton passed to Donner for nine yards and followed this with a toss to Mackey which carried to the Harvaa-d twenty-yard line. McCall whirled off tackle for six yards and Brister gained three. A running play failed and it was fourth down, one yard to go on Harvard's eleven-yard line. Now, all you Monday quarterbacks, what would you have done? Morton tried a placement goal, but it was far from good.

Wood punted from his 20-yard line and Morton fumbled, his first bobble of the season, and it was Harvard's ball at midfield. Again the Harvard steam roller started, and this time carried all the way to the threeyard line, where a forward pass was grounded in the end zone.
