That Triangular Meet
April 1931

In one of the most brilliant and sensational meets of the long history of the triangular games, Harvard's track team won from Cornell and Dartmouth in Boston this year, and the Crimson can thank long-legged A 1 Noyes of Dartmouth for the win, for the final score was Harvard 42;H>, Cornell 41, Dartmouth The last event was the pole vault and Everett Colyer of Cornell soared to an unheard of height of 13 feet, inches.

Cornell needed a second place in this event to win from Harvard by a single point, and both Cornell entries, Beloff and Courtney, were in the running, with Harvard's crack Oscar Sutermeister out of the running at only 12 feet, 6 inches. Then along came Noyes who eased into second place by the matter of three inches and the meet went to Harvard.

Dartmouth showed a well-balanced team, but simply did not have the strength to overcome Cornell and Harvard in total points. The Green showed a star performer here and there, in varied events, but the seconds and thirds were not forthcoming, and Harvard swept on to another victory.

Dartmouth, as was expected, was strong in the high jump, with Harold Moody and young Cal Milans tieing for first place, with the height at 6 feet, 1 inch. Later in the season at the intercollegiates, Moody bettered this jump by two inches, a really surprising performance for this veteran.

Lee Andrews led the pack in the 600-yard run, and running anchor man on one-mile relay team, helped Dartmouth to another first place when Capt Vernon Munroe of Harvard fell down in the final lap. Bromberg and Eliot placed second and third for Dartmouth in the 16-lb. shot event, places which usually have gone to Cornell in the past.

The feature of this meet was the return of Cornell to the long-distance championships for the Ithacans captured both the mile and two-mile events and thereby nearly the meet. Both places were practically conceded to Harvard and the result was complete consternation for the Crimson.

In track, Dartmouth always is looking one year ahead, and this year has been no exception. With an undefeated freshman team in dual competition, followers of track are already prophesying that the Green will be a factor next year, and of course the meet that everyone has his heart set on is the triangular games. There is packed all of the color of the indoor season, and even dual meets in the spring are shadowed in this traditional meet.
