Alumni Carnival
APRIL 1932

The Alumni Carnival has been sponsored by the College in past years to encourage alumni to return for winter sports at some week-end when special attention can be given them. The Outing Club assumed the management of this affair this season. A committee of Junior members of Cabin and Trail headed by P. L. Byers 'S3, was in charge of the program which featured a big get-together, ski meet and feed at Moose Cabin.

With Hanover skiing generally poor, Moosilauke and the carriage road run became more popular than ever. The opening of the big Summit Camp on ski week-ends made the mountain more accessible and undergraduates both of Dartmouth and other colleges and ski enthusiasts from all sections of New England appeared to try it. Harold Baumgarten, Austrian Olympic skier, unofficially lowered the record for the three-mile course to 8 minutes, 20 seconds. The Outing Club's Moosilauke activities came to a climax on March 13 with the annual down-mountain race attracting not only a larger field of entries than before, but a Grantland Rice Sportlight crew to film the race.

Continuing a policy begun last year, the Club brought to Hanover to lecture Capt. Ashley C. McKinley, aerial photographer, third in command of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. So great was the demand to see Capt. McKinley's pictures that two showings had to be arranged.

Among recent visitors to Hanover was CRAIG THOBN 1931 whose work in the Outing Club over a period of three years was certainly remarkable. He began a number of features, among them the Outing Club page in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and other publicity stunts. The idea of a complete history of the Club was his, and it is hoped that it will be carried out.
