Winter Trips
APRIL 1932

The usual winter trip program was somewhat handicapped this season with enough snow to make hiking wintry, without the conditions to make skiing feasible all along the chain. Regular official trips, however, were sent to Mt. Ascutney, Mt. Mansfield, Lonesome Lake, and the Benton Range, with of course the Senior Mt. Washington trip. Shortly before Carnival several members of Cabin and Trail visited Holyoke as guests of the Mt. Holyoke Outing Club while later in the season the Club was host to representatives of several preparatory schools.

Early last month nineteen seniors under the leadership of E. B. Jump '32 and R. B. Marsh '32 made the annual pilgrimage to Mt. Washington. Making their headquarters at Pinkham Notch, the group easily reached the summit Saturday. After climbing most of the way in the clouds, the party suddenly came through them between the Half-way House and the summit to find a sea of clouds stretching to the horizon in every direction with but a few of the highest peaks projecting through. About the only disappointed man of the trip was the photographer of the group who had left his best but heaviest camera equipment below when he became disgusted at the weather. The rest of the trip was devoted to skiing in Tuckerman's Ravine and on the newly opened government "fire" trail into the ravine. With no mishaps other than one member's missing a turn on the carriage road, ending up at the Glen House and returning the three miles to Pinkham Notch in a taxi, and the loss of one member in passing through Littleton en route home, the nineteen Seniors returned to college life.
