A new joint major in the departments of Economics and Political Science was approved and announced this month by the Committee on Educational Policy of the faculty. Members of the class of 1934 will be eligible to elect this major, which offers an opportunity of knitting together courses from the two departments, bringing in supplementary work in American History, Philosophy, and Sociology. There is a certain amount of latitude allowed in the placing of the emphasis, whether distributing it equally between Economics and Political Science or weighting it in one of the departments.
Two elementary courses in Economics and two in Political Science are required as prerequisites. The requirements of the new major are as follows:
Junior Year A. Six hours of American History or Philosophy or Sociology, unless previously taken, to be selected after consultation with representatives of the departments of Economics and Political Science. B. Twelve hours from the departments of Economics and Political Science, with at least three hours in each department. Senior Year A. Six hours of coordinated work in the two departments: an analysis of the economic and political aspects of some problem, such as war, international relations, or government regulation of business. B. Twelve hours from the two departments, with at least three hours in each department.
The elections under (B) in junior and senior years will be planned, with the advice and approval of the two departments, to constitute a consistent whole.
The junior and senior courses will be filled out, of course, with the two free electives each semester which the curriculum provides for.
