On May 6 and 7 the twenty-eighth annual meeting of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association was held in Hanover. There were 87 class and association secretaries or their representatives present as guests of the College for the week-end.
Friday afternoon was left free to enable the secretaries to attend a baseball game with Pennsylvania. The first business meeting was called to order at 8:00 o'clock in the library of Sanborn House, by Warde Wilkins '13, president of the Association. After the roll call by the secretary, Sidney C. Hay ward '26, Mr. Wilkins welcomed the new secretaries who had been appointed since the last meeting of the Association.
The program of speaking began with a talk by Prof. F. L. Childs '06, secretary of his class. He welcomed the secretaries to Sanborn House and told of the history and purposes of this unique and beautiful building. Then followed talks by W. F. Andres '29 on "Third Year Reunions," by Prof. C. A. Proctor '00, member of the athletic council, on the subject of "Athletics and the College," by J. R. Burleigh '14 on the "Alumni Council," by A. I. Dickerson '30, secretary of the Alumni Fund committee, on the subject of the Fund. Preceding Mr. Burleigh's report as a member of the Alumni Council, there was an intermission during which secretaries present were asked to sign a newly created Visitors Register and thus formally install this book. The Register will be kept at the Hanover Inn for the purpose of recording the names and Hanover addresses of visiting alumni as well as making available the names arid addresses of members of each class resident in Hanover.
The various talks of the evening program provided interesting material for the information of the Association. Discussion followed each of the talks, particularly the report of the Fund committee by Mr. Dickerson. The secretaries discussed ways and means of cooperating with class agents to the advantage of the Fund and the standings of their own classes.
At the- conclusion of the business program Mr. Wilkins read the report of the executive committee in which it was recommended that a contribution of $50 be given to the Alumni Fund as a gift from the Secretaries Association. This was so voted by the meeting. The climax of the evening came when Mr. Wilkins presented to John M. Comstock '77 $100 in gold from the ALUMNI MAGAZINE as a token of appreciation for his 25 years as alumni editor of the MAGAZINE. Mr. Comstock has also been secretary of his class for 55 years.
Following this presentation a letter from President Hopkins was read in which he expressed his deep regret in being unable to be present owing to his sudden departure for Paris. The secretaries voted to send him the following radiogram:
"THE DARTMOUTH SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION SENDS YOU MOST AFFECTIONATE GREETINGS AND BEST WISHES FOR A WONDERFUL TRIP OUR COMPENSATION FOR YOUR ABSENCE IS THE JOY THAT YOU CAN ONCE MORE VISIT WITH MR. TUCK AND CONVEY TO HIM A MESSAGE OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE FROM ALL DARTMOUTH MEN"
Saturday Morning
The meeting reconvened Saturday morning in Sanborn House at. 9:30 following the inspection of a specially arranged exhibit of material of particular interest to the members of the Association. The first subject for discussion was that of alumni club and association activities. Three speakers presented the advantages of club dinners, luncheons, and bulletins. These talks were given respectively by A. F. Woodies '14 of Lowell, E. P. Stocker '23 of Cleveland, and H. P. Statzell Jr. '25 of Philadelphia.
A. I. Dickerson '30 reported on his investigation in the matter of the best form for keeping class records. There was considerable discussion following his report. It was decided to ask him to serve as chairman of a committee to report next year after a more detailed survey of the question. The other members of the committee are A. M. Cate '20 and H. P. Hinman '10.
The final report of the conference was presented in behalf of the editors of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE by A. W. Frey '20, business manager, and S. C. Hayward '26, editor-inchief. Mr. Frey stated that the year had been a successful one financially, largely owing to increased return from advertising, this offsetting decreased subscriptions. Mr. Hayward spoke of projected changes in the style of the MAGAZINE, particularly in regard to a new cover and a new type face for the literary matter. He recommended that the next issue be published in October and that the editorial board for next year be left as this now stands with the exception of P. S. Marden '94, associate editor, who will retire from the board if elected to the board of trustees in June as seems assured. He stated that the MAGAZINE is presenting Mr. Marden with a specially bound and inscribed set of Richardson's "History of Dartmouth College" as an expression of the editors' appreciation of his long and untiring service. Editorial plans for next year were briefly outlined.
Vrest Orton, designing expert from the Stephen Daye Press, Brattleboro, supplemented Mr. Hayward's remarks with a talk on the merits of the new MAGAZINE format which had been proposed by him.
Committee Reports
The report on the movie service sponsored by the Association and known as "Dartmouth College News" showed that the movies have been operated this year at a deficit of approximately $400. About 100 shows have been given by various alumni clubs and individuals throughout the country. It was recommended that the series be continued next year and this was so voted by the Association.
The report of the resolutions committee consisting of N. W. Emerson '00, J. W. White '17, and J. C. Davis '19 follows:
"Resolved: that the Secretaries Association express its deep sense of loss for those of our members who have passed on. Their work is done but their memory will remain among us for many a year. They added much to that vast storehouse of service to the College which enriched their lives and inspired so many others to emulate their example. The procession moves ever onward but the College remains constant and eternally grateful for their devotion and love."
We who remain salute you: Name Class Died Maj. Edward D. Redington 1861 Oct. 9, 1931 Fred W. Eveleth 1862 Dec. 10,1931 Maitland C. Lamprey 1863 Nov. 7, 1931 Judge Wm. B. Stevens 1865 July 15, 1931 Henry Whittemore 1866 May 5, 1931
"Resolved: that the Secretaries Association once again express its sincere appreciation to the College for its warm hospitality. This year we are honored beyond measure by the courtesy of the English department in permitting us to use Sanborn House for our meetings, to the Tuck School for the use of Tuck and Stell Halls for our annual dinner and above all to Mrs. Hopkins, our hostess at luncheon. Our privileges are boundless."
"Resolved: that the Secretaries Association express its pride and affection for the long and valued service of its veteran member, John Comstock. His has been a service of genuine devotion which we hope will represent one year for each dollar of the gift of the MAGAZINE even on and beyond the century mark."
"Resolved: that the Secretaries Association express its deep appreciation for the assured election of Philip S. Marden of the class of '94 as alumni trustee of the College."
"For twelve years he has been an associate editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. From his pen have come the keen and kindly editorials which have given that department a charm and dignity second to none. He is our Phil, for he has expressed in words we cannot rival the spirit of our Association and has made clear and vivid the steps of progress made by the College. The interpreter of the new Dartmouth we would term him. We cannot replace him but we can rejoice that the College has acquired a trustee who will but continue a truly magnificent service."

Luncheon and Dinner
The Association adjourned at noon and the members proceeded at once to the President's house where they were graciously entertained at luncheon by Mrs. Hopkins. Most of the secretaries attended the two baseball games with Yale in the afternoon as the guests of the athletic council.
Through the kindness of the Tuck School the 28th annual dinner was held in Stell Hall, a most attractive location for this event. Mr. Wilkins served as toastmaster, first introducing S. C. Hayward '26, following the excellent dinner, who presented the awards to the best class and club secretaries. These were announced to be: A set of Richardson's History of the College to N. G. Burleigh 'll as the best class secretary, and a volume of "Indian Letters" to B. L. Winslow '20 of San Francisco, secretary of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California and Nevada, as the best club secretary. Honorable mention was given to three class secretaries: F. H. Horan '22, Dr. H. H. Piper '76, H. P. Hinman '10; and to three association secretaries: D. L. Mix '21 of Worcester, K. R. Maerker '10, Pittsburgh, of the Western Pennsylvania Association, and L. The dinner program of speaking continued with an informative talk by H. H. Sargeant '32 on "The Undergraduates." He was followed by Judge Charles H. Donahue '99 With a most interesting and entertaining account of the early years of the Secretaries Association. In the absence of President Hopkins, Dean W. R. Gray '04 of the Tuck School, a member of the board of trustees of the College, spoke on "Dartmouth College."
