Thinking back over 25 years of coaching debate at Dartmouth, Herbert L. James, Israel Evans Professor of Oratory and Belles Lettres, whose teams of the '6os won three national championships, began asking himself last summer the kinds of questions which haunt any coach who cares:
"Where are they now? What are they doing? Why? What are they thinking? Could it all add up to anything?"
Putting thought to deed with the encouragement and support of Sigurd S. Larmon '14, retired chairman of Young and Rubicam and a former Trustee who has long been a champion of Dartmouth debate, Professor James initiated a survey of all former debaters.
From issues of the Aegis dating back to 1900 and other records, he identified approximately 800 living alumni of the Dartmouth Forensic Union. Each was sent a six-page questionnaire.
