October twelfth the Secretary and his spouse of fifty years—hail to her fortitude! —observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary. We always have a holiday ready made for us the twelfth, and, although we did not known Columbus personally, we share our anniversary celebration with his, put out the flag and refrain from menial labor.
We announced tea from three to six and about one hundred relatives, neighbors, and friends came in to congratulate us on our mutual forbearance, youthful appearance, and future promise of the diamond anniversary; and incidentally to sample the tea and accessories.
By their cordial good will and informal sociability, our guests made the occasion most delightful.
A humorous poem by Carl Rollins gave the proper literary cast to the event.
The big thrill of the occasion—that might have been—came after it was all over, when we received a letter from Sam King, saying he came near coming up in an aeroplane from Brooklyn, N. Y. To have welcomed safe and sane Sam King from an aeroplane on our front lawn would certainly have produced a thrill. The most humorous incident of the occasion—to the principals—was the announcement in the local paper the next day that the "elderly couple were the recipients of numerous gifts." Gifts, to be sure! But "elderly couple!" Our children, R. C. Dickey and his wife, and Carl P. Rollins and his wife (our daughter) and their two daughters assisted the "elderly couple" in the technique.
