Dean Craven Laycock was the honor guest at banquets of Dartmouth alumni in New York and Boston on January 18 and 20, respectively. He was presented at both dinners by President Hopkins, who prefaced the Dean's speeches with brief laudations. Dr. Harry Chase 'O4, Chancellor of New York University, was a guest of honor and speaker at the New York banquet at the Hotel Plaza and Basil O'Connor 'l2, law partner of President Roosevelt, was a guest of honor and speaker at the Boston banquet which was held at the Chamber of Commerce. Judge Nelson P. Brown '99 acted as toastmaster at the Boston dinner, and King Woodbridge 'O4 presided in New York.
Both dinners were attended by large numbers of alumni, approximately 700 turning out for each occasion. Dean Laycock was presented with a rosewood humidor by the alumni of New York, and the Dartmouth Association of Boston gave him a silver set of tray, punch bowl, and beakers.
The presentation of Earl Blaik, Harry Ellinger, and Andrew Gustafson, who had just been announced as Dartmouth's new football coaching staff, was a highlight of both the New York and Boston banquets.
Dean Laycock went to Albany, N. Y., on January go to attend the first of a series of fourteen testimonial dinners ending in Washington, D. C., on February 28. On the following night, the Dean was honored by the Dartmouth Club of Syracuse, N. Y., at a banquet in the Hiawatha Room of the Onandaga Hotel.
