Jeff Tesreau's full diamond squad reported on March 6, but with a number of veterans resting after basketball and hockey, the real workouts of the squad did not get under way until a week later. Battery candidates, with the exception of the veteran Bob Miller, have been warming up since the middle of February, and now that all candidates are on hand, batting drills and infield practice have become daily fixtures in the indoor cage.
Outside of his pitching staff, Coach Tesreau has a full veteran team to call upon. Captain Jake Edwards, Smitty O'Brien, and Hafey Arthur form a hard-hitting outfield trio; Buster Snow, leading hitter of the league last year, Frankie Spain, Walt Keady, Phil Conathan, and Rollie Morton head the infield candidates; and Bill Clark, Jim McHugh, and Bob Bennett comprise a seasoned receiving corps. Bob Miller is the only veteran pitcher back this year, but Bob Roundey, junior hurler, has had some varsity experience, and a trio of promising sophomores are available in Joe Jayne, Ted Olson, and Chuck Barnish. Junie Allen and Bill Pounder are two likely infield candidates; Phil Clark, Bill Hart, and George Price are pushing the veteran outfielders; and Paul Hilli has shown up well as a catcher.
In infield drills to date, Coach Tesreau has used a first-string quartet Phil Conathan at first, Frank Spain at second, Junie Allen at shortstop, and Buster Snow at third. A second combination includes Rollie Morton on first, Walt Ready on second, Bill Pounder at short, and Jim Tindle on third.
The Green nine plays two practice games with Princeton on April 4 and 5, and will then engage Swarthmore on April 6 and Gettysburg on April 7 during an abbreviated spring trip at its own expense. The regular season opens at Wesleyan on April 13.
