On the basketball court, Dartmouth opened with a win over Vermont at Burlington, and followed the fine start with wins over Fitchburg State Teachers College, St. Anselm and Vermont on the home court. The only quintet that was a real test for the Indians in this group came in the match with the Saints.

In the four opening games Dartmouth has leaned heavily on sophomores Bob MacLeod and Joe Batchelder at the guards, six feet four inches of Moose Dudis at center, and Joe Cottone at right forward. Ace Bill Thomas is back once more at his left forward berth and led his mates in the scoring columns against the Saints when the going was difficult.

Besides the newcomers, the veteran performers Captain Hal Parachini, Dingle and Rocky Rockwell are leading members of the squad this year.

Perhaps the most surprising candidate on the squad is none other than Bob Reno, who will manage the football team in '37. Up until this winter Reno has hidden his basketball talents under a managerial basket, but made the squad and the second team minutes after Coach Cowles saw him in action. If he makes a letter in basketball, and it seems most certain, his doubling as a manager in one major sport and starring in another may be a new wrinkle to Dartmouth sports. The alumni would know more about this than the writer, however. Coach Cowles has started his games with Captain Parachini and Batchelder at the guards, Dudis at center and Thomas and Dingle at the forwards. But his system makes small light of a first team, for he substitutes freely at all times and the capabilities of the basketeers precludes at segregation into first and second team rankings.

As aforementioned, the Big Green may not win the Eastern Intercollegiate basketball crown, but we can expect many upsets and other well deserved victories against the major opponents.

Coach Cowles has won the unanimous support of his squad in his first year as mentor and the Dartmouth basketball fortunes will rise steadily as the season progresses.

The announcement of William H. McCarter as Director of Athletics received the whole-hearted support of the undergraduate sports fans; for we all know Bill's outstanding qualities as a leader and friend and welcome him permanently to his position that he has held previously as an Acting Director.

Dartmouth officials reacted most favorable to the proposed plans for an Ivy League in football as fostered by the college newspapers of Princeton (where the idea originated), Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth. It remains to be seen, now, whether the many traditional obstacles that have prevented this move before can be removed with this renewed attack. Only the officials of Harvard and Yale failed to respond favorably immediately after the editorial release launched in the college publications.

Dartmouth, under the colors of the Outing Club, has two ski teams superior to any in the nation. With Olympic stars, Captain Warren Olivers, Dick Durrance and Ted Hunter back for competition, the Big Green "A" team reaches a new high even for Dartmouth. Besides the Olympic aces, the nucleus of last year's teams "A" and "B" have returned to give the Indians an unprecedented superiority in America. McGill of Canada stands as the only real competition in intercollegiate ranks on the entire continent, as a matter of fact.
