THIS YEAR Winter Sports has assumed an increasingly important role in the Outing Club. A great deal of interest has been aroused by the continued success of the championship ski team under the direction of Coach Otto Schniebs. At the Intercollegiate Ski Union meet, held recently at St. Sauveur, Quebec, the team gained four firsts and five seconds in as many events, showing sufficient strength to completely forestall the efforts of a strong field of Canadian and American colleges. In two events, the combined and the jumping, the Dartmouth team took the first five and the first four places respectively. Other recent accomplishments include team victories in the Massachusetts Downhill Championship at Mt. Greylock, the New Hampshire Third Class Championships at Newport, the Third Class Eastern Downhill Championships at Laconia, and at the Mt. Mansfield Carnival.

At present writing the Eastern Downhill Championships on Dartmouth's own Mt. Moosilauke have been postponed due to poor snow conditions. If and when the races are run off, we are all in high hopes that Otto's team will come through in great shape.

But skiing interest is not centered around varsity teams alone. The Intramural Derby is a relatively new feature sponsored by the Outing Club together with the intramural department. This is a series of competitions in dormitory and fraternity circles planned to increase the undergraduate's desire for winter sports. A great deal more interest was shown this year than ever before and some real competition was evident in all the different events. In addition to the Intramural Derby, there has also been held a series of informal downhill races on the newly completed Velvet Rocks trail. During the past two Sundays, busses have taken several groups of interested skiers to the skitows at Mt. Cardigan and Woodstock.

Some forty energetic seniors matched their skiing technique against Mt. Washington's none-too-docile weather last month.
