Drop Kicked

In the fall of 1928 my roommate and I were drop-kicking a football in the side yard of the DU house. My roommate had just gotten off a good one when our beloved astronomy professor, Johnnie Poor, came around the corner. As usual, he was walking with his hands behind his back, looking down at the sidewalk. It looked as if the ball was going to miss him, and I didn't want to interrupt his thoughts, so I didn't call out a warning. The ball hit the professor smack on the head. We rushed over to see if he was all right.

"Have I hail that young man in class?" Professor Poor asked, looking at my roommate.

Yes, the previous year, I replied.

"Lucky for him. Because if I had him now I'd flunk him."

One student almost kicked himself oyt of the poor class.
