A letter from Davidson, dated March 18, makes me think Chicago weather is not as bad as I had believed. He reports that the robins had returned to his yard, and the tulips were up a couple of inches, which beats Boston on that date. He says, "Justplugging along and wondering just how allthis mess down in Washington is going topan out. Everyone here seems to be on theanxious seat, not knowing which way toturn." Chicago and Boston seem to be about alike in this regard.

Pass it to Frank Weston as a good sport. He took the Sunday, March 17, D. O. C. excursion to Mt. Moosilauke, and wrote me a description of his trip which I wish space permitted me to quote in full. There was a mile and a half walk from where the trucks deposited their loads to the Cabin, and the snow was four feet deep in places with the crust softened by the sun. As Weston was not a skier, it was some walk, and worse coming out when he had to resort to some borrowed skis, which were not as considerate of Frank as they might have been. He closes, "I was a little stiff in thelegs the next day, but felt that I had received many times my money's worth andI'm all ready to go again. But next time,I'll go prepared l'll have on a pair ofbaggy pants with suspenders prommentlydisplayed, and a pair of snowshoes, and Idon't mean maybe."

A few days ago a phone call brought me the cheerful voice of X. Y. Z. Norton. He was passing through Boston and I had an opportunity to meet him at the stationrailroad not police and have a little visit with him. He was on his way to Buffalo from the farm in Porter, Me., where he had been called by the death of his older brother. He looked ten years younger than he ought to, but admitted he didn't walk six miles a day regularly, which used to be his stunt. Everything seemed to be moving smoothly in his immediate family, but he's as perplexed as the rest of us as to where the country is going.
