A summary of organized athletics for the winter shows that a total of 3,712 men (counting duplicates) took part in the intercollegiate, intramural and recreational branches of sport at Dartmouth. Intramurals led with 2,265 participants, followed by recreation with 1,107, varsity teams with 208, and freshman teams with 133. The number taking part in winter activities was 560 greater than that for the fall season.
In the intramural program, hockey led with 525 participants, followed closely by basketball with 523. Winter sports were third with 267, with other sports in this order: squash 239, swimming 225, pingpong 185, handball 108, volleyball 91, boxing 40, wrestling 39, and foul shooting 23.
Skiing was the most popular recreational activity during the winter, heading the list with 346. Basketball came second with 182, followed by squash, 111; body building, 105; hockey, 83; volleyball, 46; boxing, 40; tumbling, 39; track, 38; swimming, 35; individual gym, 33; indoor golf, 26; and wrestling, 23.
Among the varsity squads, track led with 59, followed by gym with 45, winter sports with 38, swimming with 27, basketball with 23, and hockey with 16. The freshman basketball squad of 36 was the largest first-year group, followed by track with 30, swimming with 28, winter sports with 21, and hockey with 18.
