SANBORN HOUSE was first occupied by the department of English in the fall of 1929. Officers of Hageman-Harris, builders, said at the time of its construction that the finest workmanship and materials went into Sanborn House of any of the many college and university buildings erected by them. The building provides especially attractive and distinctively decorated office quarters for all members of the English staff. It also houses several conference and seminar rooms. Four of the larger rooms in the House are especially noted in Hanover. These are the library, the Wren room, the Shakespeare room, and the exact reproduction of Professor Edwin D. Sanborn's study, in whose memory funds for building Sanborn House were left by his son, Edwin Webster Sanborn '78. Tucked away in one of the many attractive rooms of the building is Rupert Brooke's complete library.
The cover illustration, showing the South entrance to Sanborn House is the photographic work of Ralph Sanborn '17. The building stands directly North of the old site of the White Church and adjacent to Baker Library at the library's Southwest corner.
