Seventeen members of the Dartmouth faculty received promotions at the annual spring meeting of the Board of Trustees. Ten of these were raised to full professorial rank and six were raised to assistant professorships. The Trustees also voted leave of absence during 1937-38 to 19 men on the teaching staff.

The faculty members promoted to full professorships were Churchill P. Lathrop, Art; Herbert F. West, Comparative Literature; L. Dean Pearson, English; Anton A. Raven, English; Hugh L. Elsbree, Political Science; Harold J. Tobin, Political Science; Howard F. Dunham, French; Herluf V. Olsen, Business Statistics in the Tuck School; and Albert W. Frey, Marketing in the Tuck School. Warner Bentley, assistant professor of English and director of the Players, was promoted to Director of Dramatic Production with full professorial rank.

Those promoted to Assistant Professor were Albert S. Carlson, Economic Geography; James F. Cusick, Economics; Arthur Dewing, English; Andrew H. McNair, Geology; Lauren M. Sadler, Physical Education; and Alberto Vazquez, Romance Languages. Ralph E. Bannon, research assistant in Physiological Optics, was promoted to Research Fellow with the rank of Instructor.

Leave of absence for the full academic year 1937-38 was granted to W. Byers Unger, professor of Biology; Albert S. Carlson, assistant professor of Economic Geography; Norman E. Beck, instructor in Political Science; and Earle V. Simrell, instructor in Public Speaking.

Leave for the first semester of the year was granted to Earl R. Sikes, professor of Economics; Herbert W. Hill, assistant professor of History; and McQuilkin DeGrange, professor of Sociology.

Leave for the second semester of the year was granted to William H. Wood, professor of Biblical History and Literature; Roy H. Lanphear, assistant professor of Greek and Latin; Clyde E. Dankert, assistant professor of Economics; William F. Geiger, professor of Education; Francis L. Childs, professor of English; Ellsworth D. Elston, professor of Geology; Albert L. Demaree, assistant professor of History; John G. Gazley, professor of History; A. Myrton Frye, assistant professor of Philosophy; Chauncey N. Allen, assistant professor of Psychology; Howard F. Dunham, professor of French; and Ernest R. Greene, professor of Romance Languages.
