Our friend and classmate, Chauncey Smith, whose death on December 4, 1937, has already been reported in this column, left his mark on the state and community in which he lived from 1912. Chauncey was engaged in educational work in Nevada from that year until his death, as principal and superintendent of various grade and high schools, until in 1934 he was elected to the office of state superintendent of public instruction. He was also a member of many organizations of a civic and educational character.

The Nevada State Journal expressed the esteem in which Chauncey was held in the state in the following words: "Nevada has lost an efficient public servant, a capable educator, and a kindlycitizen."
