In its financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1939, the Dartmouth College Athletic Council announces an operating surplus of $24,134.12, a figure which is $21,824.22 greater than the $2,309.90 surplus of 1937-38. Income for the year, totaling $257,709.37, was $31,679.67 higher than the previous year, due almost entirely to increased football receipts, while total expenses of $233,575.25 were $9,855.45 higher than in 1937-38. A major saving was effected in administrative expense, which was $7,032.94 less than in 1937-38.
Varsity football is the only sport to show a surplus for the year, its net profit of $117,561.88 covering the combined deficit of $70,170.84 of all other sports and leaving a departmental surplus of $47,391.04. Football's total receipts of $215,602.58 were $30,525.39 higher than in 1937, while its net profit was only $22,869.52 higher due to an increase of $7,665.87 in expense.
