The following three items, I had prepared for the June issue of the MAGAZINE, but we had so many notes that they were omitted from the MAGAZINE because I was using more space than was allotted to our class. I am, therefore, giving them to you now, even though they are a bit late.
" 'Scipio' Pool has broken into print and is the author of an article on gourds which appears in the March issue of TheGarden Gate, the official bulletin of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs.
"I was very sorry to have missed Randolph Simpson when he dropped in from Portland, Oregon. He did see Bob Holmes, however, and Bob tells me that Simpson is travelling in the East promoting a new type of steel which is put out by his organization. He is meeting with considerable success with it. He is hale and hearty and glad to get around to see some of the fellows again.
"I hear that Joe Worthen went on a 'binge' some days ago on the occasion of his son Palmer's birthday. Joe took Palmer and Bob Holmes' son, David, to New York to burn up the town. They went over by plane and saw everything there was in the place from 'Hell's a Poppin' to Radiol City. Imagine the kick that the youngsters got out of this."
Some of you may have missed the notaltion last June that Wilbur Bull received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the College at Commencement. Hop py's encomium of Wilbur was so flattering that I am quoting it verbatim.
"Graduate of Dartmouth with high andemic honors and possessed of the degreesof Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Sucre d Theology from Hartford TheologicalSeminary; you early determined and havesteadfastly held that your calling was to serve faithfully in small places. In such:communities, deaf to the calls of urbanchurches you have been a doer of lamdeeds. Esteemed in the state and nationalcouncils of your church, respected asorganizer of the Larger Parishes of Maim,among the country folk in the wide arenaof your adopted commonwealth you ariladmiringly regarded more as an institution than as an individual minister, into the countryside, with special ministry toher people, you have followed Him in whose hallowed name you perform thevaried human services; in respect of whichI confer upon you your College's degramof Doctor of Divinity."
I recently received the following mernorandum from Bob Holmes regarding Bill Patch;
"Stopped at Shelburne Falls to look up Bill Patch. Bill was doing finely and not much changed; has a young and pretty wife, a boy, 10, and a girl younger. Has a news store, confectionery, etc. in the town; an old business which he bought in June Said his family was tired of his being on the road so much. General Chemical gang him a two-months' leave of absence with pay to try it out, but Bill thinks he can make his living there. He and his brothee still work a couple of orchards."
Harold Osborne, who as you know ill General Manager of United Shoe Mi chinery, recently received some publicity due to the fact that he hauled in a 515 pound Tuna from Ipswich Bay. Harold iB quite a fisherman and has fished the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida. Jus to show he is not the only fisherman, pulled in a 569 pounder myself off the Isle of Shoals. This is no fish story inasmuch as when X arrived at the dock, Bob Burns was there and saw the fish weighed. BobBurns is also a Tuna fisher in his own right and had considerable luck this summer fishing up and down the coast, but think it did make him a bit envious to see the 569 pounder. If anybody else in til class wants to get on this Honor Roll, the better send in their names.
Fred Brock writes me that he has been. in touch with Bert Bates who is now located in New York City. Bert has been with the Western Electric Company since Tuly, 1909, and has traveled rather extensively around the country for them. At the present time, he is located at 43 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge, N. J.
Art Swenson writes that his son who araduated from Dartmouth this last June is going back to the College as an instructor in chemistry. During the summer months he has been attending a government aviation school learning how to fly. Art is hoping that the government will find some way of using granite in their preparedness program. Art summers at Straws Point at Rye and would be glad to have anybody drop in to see him there or at Concord.
