AN OPERATING SURPLUS of $6,635.74 for the fiscal year 1939-40 is reported by the Dartmouth College Athletic Council in its annual financial statement, printed in full in the adjoining columns. This surplus compares with $24,134.12 for 1938- 39 and $2,309.90 for the year before that.
Total income of $248,098.07 was $9,- 611.30 smaller than for the previous year, largely accounted for by the drop of $5,- 380.20 in football receipts; while total expenses were $7,887.08 higher than the year before, the $12,315.57 increase in football costs offsetting decreases in other departments. Administrative costs rose by $1,- 496.56, while the net profit from miscellaneous operations, such as concessions and tennis courts, was $511.10 greater than the year before.
Varsity football, as usual, is the only sport to show a surplus for the year, its net profit of $99,866.11 covering the combined deficit of 169,374.00 of all other varsity and freshman sports and leaving a departmental surplus of $30,492.11.
