THE CLASS OF 1944 in the College contains 107 premedical registrants of which 32 are sons of physicians. Of this number Horace S. Blood is the son of Robert O. Blood M'13, Donald Burnham is the son of Arthur W. Burnham M'14, Robert G. Smith is the son of Deering G. Smith M'18, and William C. Mussey is the great grandson of Reuben Dimond Mussey M 1803, who was variously professor of materia medica and therapeutics, obstetrics, medicine, anatomy, and surgery here from 1814 until 1838 when he went to Bowdoin to teach anatomy and surgery.
Dean John P. Bowler M'17, who is a member of the executive council of the Association of American Medical Colleges, attended the fifty-first annual meeting at the University of Michigan during the last week in October.
President Spencer T. Snedecor M'21, and his wife came to town after the Yale game for a week of Hanover and vicinity. We discussed with the resident members of the executive committee a mid-winter reunion in New York and possibly other centers. Further announcement will be made as soon as the date can be determined, probably in late January.
Major Harold Archibald Des Brisay, R.C.A.M.C., who was assistant professor of medicine here 1925-1930, has gone overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
Herbert B. Messenger M'28, of Franklin, N. H. was admitted to fellowship in the American College of Surgeons at the annual meeting in Chicago in October.
Ralph S. Keyes M' 34, may be addressed at the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, Castle Rock, Washington.
Lieut. John T. Smith, M.C.U.S.N. M' 27, has been assigned for duty at the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.
John Godfrey M' 39, and Winthrop Clarke M' 39, both of the Harvard delegation, will intern at Mary Hitchcock and Johns Hopkins respectively.
The Department of Radiology of the Hospital is installing a 230 kilovolt selfcontained deep therapy unit. This will supersede present equipment and will increase the scope and improve the effectiveness of roentgen treatments.
New construction northward of the second floor of the main building of the Hospital has added to the house staff quarters and provided a corridor connecting private ward directly with the operating rooms via the new elevator.
The American Roentgen Ray Society autumn meeting was held in Boston, and Leslie K. Sycamore M'25, Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Roentgenology represented the School and Hospital.
We have found out that Hermann Sander M' 36, went to the Dartmouth Grant for his honeymoon. His wife undoubtedly found out what it means to marry an ardent D. O. C., but perhaps she was just calling his bluff anyway.
We had a photocard recently showing Siegfried Stern '34, Penn. M'38, standing in front of Aerodromo de la Scadta en Soledad, Barranquilla, Colombia. Ex-winter sports managers certainly get around. He is expecting orders to report for duty in the M.C.U.S.A. sometime during December.
Elam Rust Wright M' 96, died on August 23. He had been engaged in practice for many years at Alton, New Hampshire.
William Cameron Mumler M' 36, now at Presbyterian in Chicago, has been appointed resident in medicine on the First Division of Bellevue Hospital in New York beginning in July.
On November 10 Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Kappa held its annual banquet at the Hanover Inn following the initiation of a delegation of sixteen. The address was given by William Putnam M' 32, of Lyme on "Country Practice in the Light of Modern Medical Science."
At the third annual session of the New England Postgraduate Assembly held in Boston, the School and Hospital were represented by John P. Bowler M'17, Dean and Professor of Surgery, and by Sven M. Gundersen, Instructor in Physical Diagnosis and Medicine. Dr. Bowler who is the New Hampshire member of the executive committee was also associate chairman for one of the sessions with Dr. Thomas A. Foster '10, Harvard M'14, of Portland who represented Maine.
John F. Gile M'18, Professor of Clinical Surgery, is Secretary of the New England Surgical Society which held its meeting at Poland Spring in September. Dr. Bowler who accompanied Dr. Gile contributed to the program by discussing the paper by Dr. G. Gilbert Smith "Transurethral Electrosection as Opposed to Prostatectomy." The arrangements for the meeting were in charge of Dr. Gile.
John A. Murtagh Jr., Michigan M' 34, attended the meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology held in Cleveland. Dr. Murtagh is Instructor in Otolaryngology in the Department of Anatomy and a member of the Hospital Staff in Surgery.
