UNDERGRADUATE SPEAKERS SUGGESTED by Palaeopitus had an important role at Christmas vacation meetings throughout the state at which students, fathers and prospective Dartmouth men were guests of Alumni Clubs.
Bill Maxson '40 and John Crandell '40 spoke at Bridgeport on January 4 before a good-sized crowd at the University Club. Their discussion of the current Dartmouth as reflected by the undergraduate viewpoint was well received. Crandall told of the work of Palaeopitus and discussed next year's football outlook while Maxson dealt with the ever present fraternity problem and the function of the Interfraternity Council. Also, he reviewed hockey, basketball, and baseball prospects. Jack Upton '40 introduced the speakers.
New Britain's Christmas meeting was held at the Hotel Burritt. Over thirtyfive attended, representing classes from 1885 to possible '44's. Henry Spencer '40 was the guest speaker, his subject covering undergraduate trends, athletics and the present day curriculum. It was a large order but from all reports was well done and had an enthusiastic reception. Jim Mulligan '42, assistant manager of freshman hockey gave a resume of the current varsity hockey situation.
Comes now a belated report of a Waterbury beer and sandwich rendezvous on November 15 last. We may expect a "putsch" any time now from the cellar of Doctor Bernard Berman '29 where this meeting like so many others in the past was held. Movies of the most recent Dartmouth-Yale football game were shown and general fun making prevailed under the influence of '33's outstanding wit, John Monagan.
Connecticut's largest meeting was held at the City Club in Hartford on December 28. A gathering of ninety men attended this, Hartford's annual meeting, to hear Dean Neidlinger discuss educational problems of the College and to hear also Maurice Sherman '94, editor of the Hartford Courant. Charlie Rice '33 who for ten years, seven as secretary-treasurer and three as president, has been an officer of the Hartford Club retired on that occasion and was given a vote of thanks for his outstanding service to the Club. Malvern J. Mather '29, vice president of the Club last year was elevated to the presidency, John D. Murphy '34 was named vice president and Francis T. Fenn '37 was re-elected secretary-treasurer.
