CONNECTICUT IS PROUD to report all too briefly one of the most unusual situations concerning Dartmouth Alumni which has ever come to our attention and one which may be unique in the affairs of Dartmouth men. A special congressional election will be held shortly in the bailiwick of two outstanding Dartmouth men of this State to fill a vacancy in Congress. Nominated by the Republicans and Democrats respectively, are Joseph Talbot '22 and John Monagan '33. They are alike in more ways than by membership in the Dartmouth family. Both are extremely able, popular and progressive young men; on matters of foreign policy they are and were, long before Pearl Harbor, of like mind. Either would serve his constituency without fear or favor and with credit to his state and nation. It is indeed stimulating to witness two sons of Dartmouth thus engaged in political combat and perhaps it is a portent of things to come. I wish space permitted more complete coverage of this peculiarly interesting situation.
The clubs in New Haven, Bridgeport, Hartford and New Britain held satisfactory Christmas meetings last month. The largest one was a dinner meeting in Hartford where Bob Strong '24, Dean of Freshmen, spoke with customary cogency and' vigor. Fred Carey '43, end on the football team, also discussed that topic and other more important student matters. Over 70 men attended and helped to elect a new slate of officers for the ensuing year. One notable feature of the evening was a cash collection of $20 for the Red Cross Relief Fund.
Bridgeport had a dinner meeting on December 29 which was addressed in extremely worthwhile fashion by Professor Andy Scarlett '10, head of the Chemistry Department, who is rapidly becoming a national authority on plastics. The fifty-odd conglomerated protoplasms who heard him were intrigued by the manner in which molecules were bruited about. However, the same old look appeared on the face of some, including yours truly, who struggled with chemistry in College. Don Baldwin '42 and Jack Storrs '42 represented the undergraduates in speaking roles and confirmed Bridgeport's recommendation of them three and a half years ago.
New Haven and New Britain had luncheon gatherings, both of which were well attended by undergraduates, fathers and prospects. Francis Horan '22 an eminent member of the New York Bar and Doug Stowell '42, New Haven's handsome football stalwart did the speaking chore for New Haven fellow-travelers, while Ben Page '42 and Jim Mulligan '42 carried the ball for the undergraduates in New Britain.
All in all, Connecticut is quite happy about the whole thing.
