The varsity cross-country team, under coach Ellie Noyes, opened the season with a 20-39 loss to a strong Manhattan team. Racing over a five-mile course at New York's Van Cortlandt Park, the Indians were paced by sophomore star Tom Laris, who took first with an excellent clocking of 25:10.4. However, the Jaspers swept second through sixth place. Sophomore Dan Tompkins finished 7th for the Indians, while veteran Nick Jennison was 8th, Captain Roger Coates 12th, and sophomore Dud Halligan 13th.

A week later the Indians played host to Yale and Columbia in a triangular meet, and despite a rain-soaked course, Tom Laris blazed home in first place to set a new course record with a time of 25:41. Jennison finished fourth, Tompkins sixth, Halligan 9th, and Captain Roger Coates 13th; but it wasn't quite enough as Yale took first place with 28 points to Dartmouth's 33, while Columbia trailed with 77 points.

A week later, on a dry Hanover course, Tom Laris again came home first and again set a record with a clocking of 25:32. Jennison was third, Tompkins fifth, Coates ninth, and Halligan 10th, but again it was not quite enough and the Indians lost out to Brown by a one point margin 27-28.
