JOHN M. DE SIEYES '40 became the second Dartmouth undergraduate to be drawn into the European conflict when he was summoned home by the French Army just after the spring recess. Called up by the French government with other men in his age class, de Sieyes hoped to be enlisted as a chasseur or ski soldier in the French Alpine forces. He was president of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and manager of freshman baseball. The first student to enter the war was Warren Zeller '41, who left college last December to join the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Before leaving Hanover, de Sieyes through the Friends of the Dartmouth Library gave the College four manuscript letters from his collection. Two were by Charles Dickens, one by John Greenleaf Whittier, and one by Richard le Gallienne.
