MEET BEN GEORGE
The following is an excerpt from a sketch of our Class Treasurer, taken from the Christmas number of the Chicago Electricaltrical News, which I felt certain would be appreciated by the men of '84.
"Sixty years of handling other people's money—this is the impressive record chalked up by Benjamin Pierce George, Secretary of both the National Electrical Credit Association and its central division, who this year celebrates his silver anniversary with the association. Elected class treasurer when a Dartmouth freshman, he practically entered upon his life work at that time, for he has since served as treasurer of every organization with which he has been associated.
"Following his graduation from college in 1884, George spent some time in the lumber business, first in Wisconsin and later in Minnesota, as credit man, then in the coal business in lowa, then in the credit department of the George H. Bowman Cos. of Cleveland, Ohio. In 1908 we find him in Chicago as head of the credit department of Beardslee Chandelier Manufacturing Cos., where he was active until 1931, and has been the company's treasurer for the past twenty-three years. In 1915 began George's association with the electrical credit group, continuous for a quarter of a century. A spirited fight for recognition of, and payment in accordance with, credit terms, in which he insisted that terms were as important as price, brought George into the limelight, and he succeeded Frank Pierce as central division representative to the National Convention. Elected to the board of managers, he represented this section for the next sixteen years; then in 1932 was elected secretary of the central division, the position he now holds. He has also been secretary of the national organization for the last two years. At the latter group's annual convention held at the Palmer House this spring, George was presented with a silver plaque 'in appreciative recognition of twenty-five years of loyalty and faithful service rendered in behalf of the National Electrical Credit Association.'
